Michael Whelan grew up in California and from an
early age was interested in the imagery of
science fiction and fantasy.
He graduated from San Jose State University in
1973 as a President's Scholar with a B.A. in
painting and later studied at the Art Center
College of Design in Los Angeles.
After sending some work to the 1974 World Science
Fiction Convention, he received his first cover
assignment from Donald Wollheim at DAW Books.
To date Michael has won the Hugo World Science
Fiction Award for best professional artist 12
times and the Howard World Fantasy Award 3 times.
